Sixth Form

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our Atrium Studio 6th Form!

As Atrium’s Director of Post-16 provision, I’m proud to lead such a forward-thinking 6th Form that supports students in their progression towards university and fulfilling careers.

Having spent three years as Deputy Head of South Dartmoor Community College’s 6th Form and Head of Year, I’m looking forward to working with all our Atrium students, their parents/carers and families.

An inspiring and enriching new Studio School, Atrium’s 6th Form is unique in Devon. Our specialised curriculum, personally-tailored learning plans and dedicated pastoral support combine to offer our students numerous opportunities to achieve not only their academic, but also their personal, potential.

Our award-winning Atrium building houses many 6th Form facilities, including a common room/private study area, state-of-the-art IT and computing facilities and easy access to local industries and businesses.

Although separate from South Dartmoor Community College, we’re part of the South Dartmoor Academy and work in close partnership with SDCC’s own 6th Form. This enables Atrium students to access a broad Post-16 curriculum; using SDCC’s 6th Form Centre at Place House and an extensive library, as well as Ashmoor Sports Centre.

Our curriculum has been carefully designed to support and facilitate students’ progress into careers within the Built Environment, Creative Design and related fields. Current 6th Form core subjects are:

  • DEC (Design, Engineer and Construct)

  • 3D Art and Design

  • Graphic Design, (with the Extended Project available in Year 13 only).

Since Atrium opened in 2015, it has been one of our priorities to create, maintain and develop strong links with local and regional businesses within the Built Environment and Creative industries. These professional partnerships are an important element of 6th Form life; offering work placement, mentoring, support and guidance.

All 6th  Form students have the option of regular work placements (these are a compulsory element of the DEC course), and a range of industry support.

Please feel free to contact me at any time, should you wish to discuss any aspects of 6th Form life here at Atrium.

Implementation at Key Stage 5 (6th form)

Our 6th Form students have a tutorial base at Atrium Studio and full access to a wide range of resources. They can also access South Dartmoor Community College’s own excellent Sixth Form facilities at Place House, the SDCC Library and PSHE assembly programme.

Alongside more traditional A Levels, students also have opportunities to work towards Level 3 qualifications that are relevant to the Built Environment industry.

From September 2018, Atrium’s A-level provision will increase as the first of our Key Stage 4 cohorts make the transition into Key Stage 5.

Key Stage 5 subjects

  • DEC (Design Engineer Construct) – Level 3 Certificate
  • Graphic Design – A level
  • 3D Art and Design – A level

The curriculum has been designed to allow time each week (usually a full day) for DEC Level 3 Certificate students to undertake an extended period of work experience. Over weeks/months, they collaborate with a Built Environment employer on a specific project which then forms part of their DEC coursework and portfolio.
