Principal’s message – 6th July 2018

In an earlier Newsletter message, I mentioned that it has been a tremendous privilege for me to lead the Atrium Studio School, and that I was looking forward to exploring new opportunities in this next chapter of my life. As this will be my last message as Principal, I thought I’d share with you what these new opportunities will be.
I am starting a new business, a limited company, which will focus on motivational speaking; leadership coaching; and mental health and wellbeing training. Next Monday and Tuesday, I am delivering Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to leaders across our Academy. MHFA is an internationally recognized training course, specifically designed to teach people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help.
Mental health is something that everyone will have to deal with at some point in their life, whether in terms of getting help with mental illness, helping someone else, or dealing with stressful moments and challenges.
I believe that schools play a critical role in helping prevent the escalation of mental health problems; teaching children not only how to deal with stress and change, but also understand their own moods and thoughts, and know when to ask for help. I hope that after next week’s course, Leaders will all have: more confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress; increased knowledge of further supports available; practical skills to spot triggers of mental health issues; enhanced interpersonal skills (for example, non-judgmental listening); and – equally importantly – the tools to look after their own mental wellbeing.
A number of our staff have already completed a Mindfulness course, and Mr Westaway will continue developing strategies to enhance our students’ mental health and wellbeing next term. We are also indebted to a very generous parent for sponsoring the school to implement an online system of monitoring and tracking student and staff wellbeing.
We have lots of exciting learning activities planned for our students in the last two weeks of term! It would be wonderful to see as many as possible of you here on Friday 13th July at our ‘Celebration of Success’ assembly, from 9-10.30am.
May I also take this opportunity to thank you warmly for your support and challenge over the last few years. I look forward to hearing and reading about your children’s success in years to come.
It’s cool to succeed!
