Acting Principal’s Message – 28th September 2018

It is both a pleasure and a privilege to return to the new academic year as Acting Principal of Atrium.

Many of you will be aware that when Atrium opened in 2015, I moved across from South Dartmoor Community College, where I was Leader of the KS3 STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Maths) curriculum. My passion for hands-on project-based learning (PBL) within the STEM subjects had already taken me on many adventures over the years. I was therefore very excited to join Atrium as an Assistant Principal in charge of PBL, as we welcomed our first cohort of students.

When Mr Messias moved on to pastures new at the end of the Summer Term, I was honoured to be offered the role of Acting Principal over a strong field of excellent candidates; all of us wanting to build on the existing success of the school.
So here I am; pleased to have this opportunity to extend a warm ‘Welcome’ to our new Year 9 students and their families, and a heartfelt ‘Welcome Back’ to our returning cohorts.

I am also fortunate to work with an amazing group of staff – you will see further details on page 2 of this Newsletter. I am particularly delighted to be working closely with Mrs Woodward, who is now part of the Atrium Leadership Team as well as Leader of Maths. She, Mrs Hunter and Miss Chamberlain are currently doing an amazing job of coordinating our “Oktoberfest” event (see attached poster!). We are looking forward to seeing you and your families there, where all generations can enjoy some free pre-Hallowe’en fun. You and your child will also be able to take advantage of careers/work experience advice from industry professionals, and see some fantastic feasibility study work presented by Year 11. These will count towards their DEC! coursework, and I know they have been working hard with Mr Westaway to showcase their high-calibre displays to family and friends.

I am proud to be a part of the future we are designing here at Atrium.

May I also take this opportunity to thank you all for your continuing support of our wonderful students. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or my PA, Mary Chamberlain (“Mary2”) if you have any queries, concerns or feedback.

Sam Morcumb, Acting Principal
